WHS students enrolled in Mrs. Tighe's Environmental Science course traveled to the Rock River Environmental Services (Pagel Pit) Landfill and to the Rock River Water Reclamation District to find out how solid waste and sewage is handled in a large community. Students were given a tour of Pagel Pit and learned about how solid waste is handled from the time it is picked up at the curb to when it is buried at a landfill. Although Pagel Pit does not have a recycling facility, the RRES collects recycling from the curb and sends it to a state of the art recycling facility in Homer Glen, IL. After leaving Pagel Pit, students traveled to the Water Reclamation Plant where they followed sewage from when it enters the facility to the discharge of processed waste as either solids that are spread on farm fields or water that is released to the Rock River.
